Yes, you can freeze stuffing. Cooked stuffing, also called dressing, keeps its best quality for 2 to 3 months in the freezer, the USDA's time for casseroles. In the fridge it keeps 3 to 4 days. The one rule that matters most: always take stuffing out of the turkey before you store it, and never freeze a turkey with the stuffing still inside.
How long does stuffing last?
- In the fridge: 3 to 4 days, counted from the day it was cooked.
- In the freezer: 2 to 3 months for best quality. The USDA's Thanksgiving guidance allows up to 6 months; the shorter time keeps it tasting fresh.
- At room temperature: no more than 2 hours.
- Dry stuffing mix, unopened: 9 to 12 months in the cupboard.
Why must stuffing come out of the turkey?
Stuffing inside the bird cools slowly in the middle, which gives bacteria time to grow. The USDA says to remove all stuffing from the cavity straight after the meal and refrigerate it separately in a shallow container. For the same reason, never freeze or refrigerate a turkey with stuffing inside.
How do you freeze cooked stuffing?
- Let it cool, then refrigerate it within 2 hours of cooking.
- Pack it into freezer bags or containers in portions, pressing out the air.
- Or freeze it in a foil pan you can put straight into the oven, wrapped tightly.
- Label it with the date.

How do you reheat frozen stuffing?
Thaw it overnight in the fridge, or bake it straight from frozen. Add a splash of broth, cover with foil and heat at about 350°F (175°C) until it is 165°F (74°C) in the middle, then uncover for 10 minutes to crisp the top. More in how to reheat meal prep and how to thaw meal prep safely.
How can you tell if stuffing has gone off?
A sour smell, a slimy texture or any mould mean throw it away. Stuffing made with sausage, oysters or eggs spoils as quickly as the meat in it, so stick to the 3 to 4 days even if it looks fine. Do not taste it to check.
