Cooked steak keeps 3 to 4 days in the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or colder, the same as other cooked meat on the US government's storage chart. UK guidance is stricter and says eat cooked leftovers within 2 days. Raw steak keeps 3 to 5 days in the fridge, much longer than ground beef, because bacteria sit on the surface rather than all the way through.

How should you store leftover steak?

Let it rest and stop steaming, then refrigerate it within 2 hours of cooking. Keep it whole rather than sliced if you can: less cut surface means it stays juicier and dries out less. Wrap it tightly or seal it in a container.

How long does cooked steak last in the freezer?

For best quality, 2 to 3 months. Frozen at 0°F (-18°C) it stays safe for longer, but it dries out and can taste stale. Wrap it tightly and press the air out of the bag; how to prevent freezer burn has the details. Raw steaks keep their quality much longer frozen, 4 to 12 months.

What temperature should steak be cooked to?

The US safe minimum for whole cuts of beef is 145°F (63°C), then a 3-minute rest. Ground beef is different: it must reach 160°F (71°C), because grinding mixes surface bacteria inside. See how long ground beef lasts.

How do you reheat steak without overcooking it?

  • Slice it thinly and warm it in a hot pan with a splash of broth for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Or warm a whole piece in a 250°F (120°C) oven until hot in the middle, about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Or eat it cold, sliced over a salad or in a rice bowl.

If you reheat it, heat it until it is hot all the way through. More in how to reheat meal prep.

What can you make with leftover steak?

Sliced steak goes well in rice bowls, fajitas, stir-fries and salads. The flavours in beef and broccoli rice bowls and chicken fajita bowls work with thinly sliced steak instead of the meat in the recipe; add it at the end so it only warms through.

How can you tell if cooked steak has gone off?

A sour smell, a slimy surface or a grey-green sheen mean throw it away. The bacteria that cause food poisoning do not always change the smell, so go by the 3 to 4 days. For other foods, see how long meal prep lasts.
