Pasta salad keeps 3 to 4 days in the fridge. The FoodSafety.gov cold storage chart gives 3 to 4 days for macaroni and other prepared salads, and says they do not freeze well. The USDA FoodKeeper lists pasta salad at 3 to 5 days; this site uses the shorter figure, so you only need to remember one rule for chicken, egg, tuna and pasta salads.
How long does pasta salad last in the fridge?
Three to four days at 40°F (4°C) or colder, from the day you made it, in a sealed container. Put it in the fridge within 2 hours of mixing. If the salad has tuna, chicken, ham or egg in it, the same 3 to 4 days apply, and the shortest time of any ingredient is the one to follow. For the pasta on its own, see how long cooked pasta lasts.
Can you freeze pasta salad?
Not well. The cold storage chart says it does not freeze well, and the FoodKeeper lists freezing as not recommended. The vegetables go limp, and the dressing can separate. If you want a freezer step, freeze the plain cooked pasta, which keeps 1 to 2 months by the USDA time, and add the vegetables and dressing after it thaws. The details are in can you freeze cooked pasta.
How to make pasta salad for the week
- Cook the pasta, rinse it under cold water, drain it well and chill it before mixing.
- Keep the dressing in a small jar and add it on the day you eat, so the pasta does not soak it all up.
- Add soft vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumber on the day, too, or they release water into the container.
- Label the container with the date. See how to label meal prep.
- Keep it cold: a salad left out for more than 2 hours should be thrown away.
How can you tell if pasta salad has gone off?
A sour smell, a slimy film on the pasta or any mould means throw it away. Do not taste it to check. If it is past 4 days, throw it out even if it looks and smells normal.
Which recipe uses it well?
The tuna pasta salad recipe is made to be eaten cold from the fridge for several days, and the pesto chickpea pasta works the same way. Both are in the 3 to 4 day window when kept covered. For more cold lunch ideas, see meal prep lunch ideas for work.
Should you reheat it?
Pasta salads are eaten cold, so no reheating is needed. If you want it warm, heat it until steaming hot all the way through, 165°F (74°C), which is the temperature for any leftovers. More methods are in how to reheat meal prep.
