Tuna salad keeps for 4 days in the fridge. The USDA FoodKeeper data puts seafood salads, including tuna, shrimp and salmon salad, at 4 days, and it does not recommend freezing them. Count the 4 days from the day you made the salad, not from the day you opened the can. Tuna salad mixed with mayonnaise is the kind most people make, and it needs to stay cold the whole time.

How long does tuna salad last?

Four days in a sealed container in the fridge, at 40°F (4°C) or colder. Keep it in the coldest part of the fridge, not in the door, where the temperature changes each time you open it. Do not leave it out for more than 2 hours. In hot weather, above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour. More on the wider rules is in how long meal prep lasts in the fridge.

Can you freeze tuna salad?

No. FoodKeeper does not give a freezer time for seafood salads, because mayonnaise separates when it thaws and the texture breaks down. Make the salad in smaller batches instead. For foods that do freeze, see foods that freeze well.

What is the safest way to keep it?

  • Make it with cold ingredients and chill it straight away.
  • Pack it into small containers, so you only open the portion you are eating.
  • Pack a cold pack or ice block if you take it to work. See work lunch with no fridge for the rules when there is no fridge at all.
  • Throw it away after 4 days, even if it still smells fine. Spoiled food is not always obvious.

Is canned tuna itself safe to store?

Yes. Unopened canned tuna is stored in the pantry, and once it is opened, the tuna should be moved into a sealed container and kept in the fridge. Use it within the same 4 days as the salad. The tuna pasta salad recipe can be made in one go and eaten for lunch on three days, which keeps everything inside the 4-day limit.

How do you make tuna salad keep better?

Lemon juice and vinegar do not make the salad safe for longer, so do not rely on them. Keep it cold and eat it within the time. For a lunch plan that uses the fridge well, see meal prep lunch ideas for work and high-protein lunch without a microwave.
